A Dedicated Amateur

A stranger saw me set up to photograph ruins along a walking path with the Rebel XT and 70-300mm lens attached and asked if I was a photographer. My quick reply was, "Only when I'm taking pictures."

But perhaps this is just one of those relative questions...
To the uninitiated, I "look" like a photographer. The Rebel, especially with a long telephoto lens, is certainly unlike any of the regular point-and-shoot digitals on the market, so I must be a photographer, right?

Me, I refer to myself as a dedicated amateur - seemingly dedicated to remaining an amateur. I would assume that professionals ALSO see me as an amateur, but that's just a guess on my part.

Technically... Digital photography has become a part of my job, so I actually get paid to act as a photographer. I've got print credits. So I am a professional. It's just that, looking at my body of work, I can't consider myself a professional photographer, since I haven't yet taken a photograph and said, "Yeah, that's it. I nailed it."

Still... god knows, I love taking pictures.

Macro
EF 100mm 1:2.8 USM

Rented this lens for a time in early Spring, 2007, and knew I had to have one. See my Real World Lens Test.

UltraWide Zoom
EF 17-40mm f/4L

This lens replaces the kit lens as my walkabout choice. Very impressive build quality, sharp images. Gotta love a good wide angle lens.

Some quick examples of the 70-300mm at both extremes.

(Jan. 6, 2007)

Using my back yard as a model, these photos show the range of the lens.
The 300mm setting is a bit disappointing to me. Compared to the 70-200 "L" series Canon lens, it's not nearly sharp enough...

Nice example of the 10X optical zoom. A series of three shots from a stationary position. First shot at 38mm (film equivalent)... The world-famous Longwood Gardens is about an hour from my home, and I've been there several times. The photos here were taken at the Chanticleer Estate in Wayne, Pennsylvania, a place that I discovered only in 2005.
Second shot at midway, 144mm (film equivalent)... The estate features a wonderful mixture of settings, from open fields with wildflowers to wooded areas with flowing streams. There were enough photo ops to keep me busy all day and the S1 was flexible enough to handle most situations.
Final shot at full zoom, 380mm (film equivalent)... In fact, it was Chanticleer that made me decide to try my own hand at growing photo ops. Click the link to Garden, a description of my War Against Nature...

What you won't see...

• Family photos.
• Citizens, whether in public or private, with any expectation of privacy.
• Photos which, in my opinion, are potentially embarrassing to anyone other than myself.
• Photos of accidents, tragedies, grief, or troubling circumstances.
• Photos with potential liability, civil or criminal.
I believe that a certain Code of Ethics goes hand-in-hand with photography, especially when images are universally shared over the internet. Like pornography, I cannot define these Ethics, but I think I know them when I see them.

What you will see...

• Bug shots.
• Animals that wander into my viewfinder.
• Flowers, shrubs, trees.
• Public figures in public settings.
• Public settings...with or without figures.
• Citizens in public, where no expectation of privacy is warranted.

That's why, with well over 5,000 images at hand, I can present only the few on these pages.
Well, that, and the fact that the vast majority of the rest are crap.
