2016 Ford Escape SE 4WD
The third vehicle to wear the plate TFROG

October 17, picked out an Oxford White 2016 Escape SE, and may have gotten it right the first time!
The Escape left the Louisville assembly plant only two days before. Still had plastic protective wrap and stick-on styrofoam blocks all over, which may be because it had only just come off the truck.

If torque is the amount of "get up and go," then horsepower is what keeps you going. I thought I wanted the 2.5L Duratec engine, rated at 168 hp @ 6000rpm and 170 ft-lb. of torque at 4500rpm, but this is available only with front wheel drive. The 1.6L EcoBoost® engine in our Escape puts out 178HP* (at 5700rpm) and 184 ft-lbs. (at 2500rpm), respectively. (This is the same 1.6-liter engine found in the Fiesta ST.) The top-of-the-line Escape engine is the 2.0L EcoBoost® rated at 240* (5500) and 270 (3000), shared with the Focus ST. Our 1.6L engine with "Intelligent 4 Wheel Drive" has an EPA estimated mileage of 23 city, 29 highway, or 25mpg combined, and I am averaging 24+. (* Peak horsepower ratings achieved on 93 octane premium unleaded gasoline.)

The automatic has an S below the D, which is for Sport driving. Basically, it still drives like an automatic, but the driver has more input in up- and down-shifting. The trans will hold the revs higher for longer for a sportier sound and feel. Eh.

The rear view camera comes on when, naturally, I shift into reverse. It shows the track you would take if you continue steering in the present direction, and is truly helpful in backing up TO an object or barrier (wall, fence, other car, etc.).

Because this is a brand new truck, because this is a brand new turbocharged engine, and because I AM an old fart, the Escape will go in for its first oil change shortly after hitting 1,000 miles. (That's about 3 weeks.) Maintenance records will be kept right here, for anyone interested in the cost of operating a new Escape.

The TFROG plate was originally worn by a 1993 Mustang 5.0 that I kept for 19 years. It felt strange putting that plate on the back of the 2013 Focus, but seeing it on the back of an SUV is other-worldly. Hopefully this plate will find a new home on the back of something more appropriate. Something with a stick shift.
